John Lee

Trinity School at Greenlawn has a new head of school—John Lee, a veteran science teacher, dean of boys and varsity soccer coach from the River Ridge campus of Trinity Schools in the Twin Cities.

Mr. Lee has taught biology, chemistry, German, mathematics, life science, earth science and Scripture during his 14 years on the River Ridge faculty. He coached the River Ridge varsity girls’ soccer team for nine years, leading them to the state championship game in 1999. He has been an assistant coach for the boys’ varsity soccer team since 2005. He holds a B.A. in German from Santa Clara University and a B.S. in biology from the University of Minnesota.

“John Lee is a leader among the faculty. He will bring great energy and broad teaching and administrative experience to his new role as head of school,” says Dr. Kerry Koller, president of Trinity Schools. “I am delighted that he has accepted the position.”

Mr. Lee is a former semiprofessional soccer player and was a nationally competitive cyclist at Santa Clara University. He is an avid outdoorsman and woodworker.

He says he is eager to meet the students and parents at Greenlawn and to grow in his relationships with the Greenlawn faculty. “The chance to participate in a vigorous exchange of ideas in a community of learners first drew me to Trinity School in 1996 and still inspires me today. I’m looking forward to joining the community of learners at Greenlawn in August.”

River Ridge head of school Jon Balsbaugh says Mr. Lee’s zeal for learning will be missed. “He’s an excellent teacher. He has an open and inquisitive mind, a desire to engage and understand reality and an eagerness to share what he’s learning with students and faculty alike. He will bring to Greenlawn a passion for educational excellence, a strong work ethic, a love of Trinity Schools and a deep commitment to the Lord.”

Mr. Lee was born in North Dakota and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He and his wife Mary have three children, Henry (6), Liam (5) and Audrey (1). Through Mary, the Lees have deep roots in the South Bend area. Mary attended Trinity School at Greenlawn for four and a half years before a job transfer brought her family to Minnesota, where she graduated from River Ridge in 1993. She was a  River Ridge faculty member for five years, teaching Humane Letters, science and history courses. Two sisters (Greenlawn parents Kathy Cramer and Lisa Loughran) and a brother (John Hengen) live in the South Bend area.

Mr. Lee is Greenlawn’s fifth head of school.
